McKinney-Vento Act: Support for Students Experiencing Housing Instability

We understand that housing situations can change. Our goal is to ensure every student has stability, support, and full access to their education—regardless of their living situation.

💡 Think your student may qualify?

If your student may be experiencing housing instability, please complete the Student Housing Questionnaire or contact our McKinney-Vento liaisons for support.

What is the McKinney-Vento Act?

The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law that protects the educational rights of students experiencing homelessness. It ensures immediate enrollment, school stability, and access to support services for children and unaccompanied youth.

Who May Qualify?

Students may qualify if they are:

  • Sharing housing due to loss of housing or economic hardship

  • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or campgrounds due to lack of alternative accommodations

  • Staying in emergency or transitional shelters

  • Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, or other temporary settings

  • Not living in the physical custody of a parent or guardian

  • Lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence

Student Rights

Eligible students have the right to:

  • Immediate enrollment, even without normally required documents

  • Remain at the school of origin when it is in the student’s best interest

  • Transportation assistance

  • Access to school programs, activities, and services

Support Services

Students identified under McKinney-Vento may receive support such as:

  • Academic support and tutoring

  • Counseling services

  • Assistance with school supplies and uniforms

  • Coordination with housing and community resources

How Are Students Identified?

Students may be identified through:

  • Online registration in Infinite Campus

  • Family, student, or staff referral at any time during the school year

If a student’s housing situation changes after enrollment, families may still complete the Student Housing Questionnaire to determine eligibility for services.
